Few Major Neurological Conditions Treated

Parkinson's and Movement Disorders

Parkinson's disease is a progressive disorder that affects the nervous system and the parts of the body controlled by the nerves. Symptoms start slowly.

It has four classical markers indicated with acronym TRAP - Tremors(T), Rigidity(R), Akinesia(inability to move muscles), and Postural instability(P). Although Parkinson's disease can't be cured, medicines can significantly improve its symptoms.

Occasionally, a neurologist may suggest surgery to regulate certain regions of the brain and improve symptoms. People usually develop the disease around age 60 or older. Risk factors include age, heredity, and exposure to toxins like herbicides and pesticides.

Epilepsy

Epilepsy — also known as a seizure disorder — is a brain condition that causes recurring seizures. There are many types of epilepsy. In some people, the cause can be identified. In others, the cause is not known.

Seizure symptoms can vary widely. Some people may lose awareness during a seizure while others don't. Some people stare blankly for a few seconds during a seizure. Others may repeatedly twitch their arms or legs, movements known as convulsions. Having a single seizure doesn't mean you have epilepsy.

Epilepsy is diagnosed if you've had at least two unprovoked seizures at least 24 hours apart. Unprovoked seizures don't have a clear cause.

Treatment with medicines or sometimes surgery can control seizures for most people with epilepsy. Some people require lifelong treatment. For others, seizures go away. Some children with epilepsy may outgrow the condition with age.

Stroke

An ischemic stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is blocked or reduced. This prevents brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients. Brain cells begin to die in minutes.

Another type of stroke is a hemorrhagic stroke. It occurs when a blood vessel in the brain leaks or bursts and causes bleeding in the brain. The blood increases pressure on brain cells and damages them.
A stroke is a medical emergency. It's crucial to get medical treatment right away. Getting emergency medical help quickly can reduce brain damage and other stroke complications. Effective treatments also can help prevent disability from stroke.

Symptoms of stroke include trouble speaking and understanding what others are saying, numbness, weakness or paralysis in the face, arm or leg, problems with vision, headache, and trouble with walking or balance. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a stroke, even if they seem to come and go or they disappear completely.

Think "FAST" and do the following:

Face(F). Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?
Arms(A). Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? Or is one arm unable to rise?
Speech(S). Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the person's speech slurred or different from usual?
Time(T). If you see any of these signs, call emergency medical help right away.

Headaches

A headache is a pain in your head or face that’s often described as a pressure that’s throbbing, constant, sharp or dull.

There are more than 150 types of headaches. They fall into two main categories: primary and secondary headaches.

Primary headaches are not a symptom of or caused by an underlying medical condition. They could be genetic. Types of primary headaches include tension-type, migraine, cluster headaches and so on. Some of them can be triggered by lifestyle factors or situations including food, sleep, posture, physical activity etc.

Secondary headaches are caused by an underlying medical condition. They’re considered a symptom or sign of a condition. Types include dehydration headaches, sinus headaches, medication overuse headaches, and so on. Headaches tend to run in families, especially migraines. Children who have migraines usually have at least one biological parent who also experiences them.

Neurological disorders can have variety of symptoms which include headache, convulsions/fits, memory loss, sudden loss of vision, double vision, slurred speech swallowing difficulty, facial asymmetry, weakness in one half of body (commonly called as paralysis), weakness in both hands or both legs, tremulousness in hands, tingling or numbness in hands or legs, difficulty in walking.

Yes, most of the neurological disorders are treatable with medications. However, a correct diagnosis and early treatment are necessary for the same. A few neurological disorders don’t have a definite cure today in medical science. However, the severity of symptoms of these diseases can be reduced by medicines so that patients can have a good quality of life.

Many of the dementia cases don’t have a definite cure however medications can be given to slow the disease process and improve symptoms of dementia. However many curable diseases can mimic dementia and it is very important to consult a neurologist as early as possible to rule out these potentially curable diseases.

Patients who have a stroke are often absolutely normal when they suddenly experience these symptoms – weakness or numbness in one half of the body, facial deviation, slurred speech, inability to speak or understand what is communicated to them, imbalance of the body, double vision, difficulty in swallowing or change in voice.

Psychiatrist primarily deals with psychological disorders like schizophrenia, depression, mania while a neurologist deals with physiological illnesses(physical illnesses).
